Megan Joins the Team!
Megan Pennefather says that she was not popular in high school and goes as far as calling herself, “a dork.” Megan embraces this term, which is usually meant as an insult, because it has given her, “an appreciation for the underdog and outsider.” This appreciation comes in handy now that she is the Campus Coach for the Transition to Independence Program at Wayne State University (TIP Wayne State). TIP Wayne State works to increase college access and improve graduation rates of foster care youth. And as Campus Coach, Pennefather connects students to services while trying to listen to and understand each student participating in the program. “People often believe the worst about foster care youth and don’t give them the benefit of the doubt, but I believe that everyone deserves respect.”
Megan is a graduate of Michigan State University and completed her Master’s of Social Work at Wayne State University. She believes that TIP Wayne State is a “unique and needed” program and Megan is already building a strong rapport with students. Students can stop by the office Monday through Friday 9 am- 5:30 pm and can reach staff 24 hours a day.
